Samsung Wave sync with iCal
My old cellphone was long overdue and I wanted to make the switch to a smartphone for a couple of reasons. For instance I want to be able to check my e-mail everywhere I go preferably with the possiblity to use WiFi. Furthermore I am also a big fan of the potential of Twitter and in lesser extend Facebook. Therefore connectivity to the social platform was an advantage, but the main reason was to organize my activities and tasks and sync them with my laptop.
I made a choice and preordered a Samsung Wave. Which combined the organizing aspects and great multimedia specs with a 1 Ghz processor and a super amoled display. Thanks to the preordering I am one of the first proud owners.
But it is not all a bed of roses as an early adopter. The new operating system Bada requires conform applications, but the varity in the app store is still quite limited. Therefore there is no application that synchronises your calendar with iCal. Furthermore you cannot find handy information of prior users. That’s the reason for this current post.
I found a way to sync your calendar on a Samsung Wave with iCal on Mac OS. The solution uses a detour instead of syncing directly. The first step is to sync your iCal with google calendar.
- Select preferences in iCal
- Accounts
- Insert username and password
- Server: www.google.com & path: /calendar/dav/YOUR@EMAIL.COM/user/
- Use SSL
Now you can sync in two ways to the google calendar. The next step is to sync your Samsung Wave with the google calendar.
- Go to calendar app
- Settings -> Calendar sync
- Add -> Exchange ActiveSync
- Username & password
- Domain: google
- Server URL: m.google.com & use SSL
Now you are all set to sync your events from your phone to laptop and vice versa. Happy syncing!
Edit: below you can find the transition of screens you are suppose to see.
Edit 2: New firmware is released. With this update you normally all can sync google calendar now.

I was able do sync my Wave with google calendar using this info but I get a strange error. If I add something in Google Calendar and then sync with the wave all my scheduled appointments are 1 day earlier then they really are at Google Calendar. Did you noticed this ?
I had a similar problem that my appointments were scheduled 1 hour earlier, but fixed it with the settings of time and date. There I switched DST on and corrected the hour on my wave and the problem was solved.
Regarding your problem I think you should check your settings of time and date on your Wave as your google calendar. Make sure both are configured in the right timezone. Let me know if the settings are correct but the difference is still there.
Edit: I now discovered your problem too. I removed the sync account and added it again, because it was doing weird things. The problem lies with appointments with the option all day in google calendar. My guess is that the conversion goes wrong between the all day option in google calendar and the wave. An inferior solution is to give all the appointments exact durations with hours. Then the sync goes well.
Well it does work If I don’t add new events trough google calendar with “all day” option. I exchanged “all day” events to a begining and end hour and now it’s ok. It’s an “ok” solution. I still didn’t tested if I had a “all day” event in the wave and then sync it to google calendar what will happens. Tks for your help
I have been trying to set up an exchange active sync account. At work I have been told which URL and Domain to use but i can’ t find anywhere in the options the place where to insert the Domain. Can anyone help me? By the way I am trying to set uo the exchange active sync via a wifi connection and not via the internet connection of the telecom provider. does that influence somehow the operation?
First of all the type of connection does not influence the synchronization process. I think you can setup the exchange active sync account thru the last six steps in the blogpost but change the domain and server URL.
1. Go to calendar app
2. Settings -> Calendar sync
3. Add -> Exchange ActiveSync
4. Username & password
5. Domain: google (change this to your company’s domain)
6. Server URL: m.google.com & use SSL (change this to the server’s URL and select use SSL if the server supports its)
This is exactly what I tryed, But the problem is that I do not have the fiels where I can input a domain. I only have username, password and URL . there is no other field such as domain, ssl etc.
I have to input a domain name in order to sync with my outlook at work but i cant input the information as I can’t seem to find the field anywhere
Help
Do you have a samsung wave or an other samsung device? Maybe you can try this:
1) Go to home screen (Diamond shaped key in the middle)
2) Settings -> applications
3) Email -> Email accounts
4) New -> Exchange ActiveSync
5) There should be the fields: email, username, password, domain
I have a samsung wave.
What I noticed is that you (and the manuals also) keep mentioning Exchange ActiveSync while on the phone I only find Email for exchange as an item. I start beliving there are different versions of the software. is there a way to see what version I am running? perhaps with those info you can help me out?
I found the version bmyself
Bada 1.0
1005201728LISJEE
Are you running anything different?
Same version here: Bada 1.0 1005201728LISJEE
That’s odd that the menus are different, have you tried contacting samsung about this problem?
Fastest way is to tweet to @samsungbada
yes, but up until now the support of samsung seems not to take the question seriously. They referred me to the samsung site where the only info is how to set up the phone for your telecom provider’s internet (with the shortcut to have the provider sms you the settings) but no reaction on my explicit exchange sync problem.
By the way,
one of the support agent i had on the phone mentioned that different countries might have different menus. Now i think this item (domain) is indipendet from the country settings in one’s phone. But just to be sure, how is your phone set? mine is set vor use in the Netherland (where I reside) but the language is set to english. My collegue with the same phone has the same problem and he is set county and language both on Netherland.
I think the settings of my phone are Belgium and diplay language English, but I am not sure because I can only find the display language.
So the phone country/language setings should not make a difference. The software is the same the only variable I can imagine is that I am connected via my home WiFi as an AP to get on the internet. Perhaps once connected via de phone internet settings of the telecom provider the menus might be different? To know I will have to wait till october. Mi new contract will start than and right now I have a sim only contract with talk minutes and no internet.
Or do yu have some other helpful idea?
Samsung just released a new firmware update. You can now update your samsung wave through kies right now. So maybe that will help your problem.
Thanks for the tip. I did the firmware upgrade yesterday evening and everything went fine. Unfortunately there is no mention anywhere of what the firmware does. It would have been nice to know what is improved / corrected with the introduction of the new firmware. A kind of release notes. By he way I could not see any difference yet. And also I noticed that on the samsungmobile.com site there is no fitrmware available. Only via KIES. Wonder why. Do you by any chance know what de new firmware improves?
I did not update my wave yet, but I find it very strange that your problem still isn’t solved. I could not find release notes too. To get back on your problem, maybe you can try to turn off your phone and decouple the battery and put it back in. When you boot your phone you can try to alter the country settings. At the moment that is my last option to help you with your problem.
I have tryed that already but thanks for keeping on thinking with me. The more I try the more I am convinced that it all depends on the fact that I do not have the phone yet set for internet via the telecom but are only using the wifi capabilities until now. In October my new provider subscription (with internet) will start. I hope things will work than. As for the firmware upgrade as i told you all went fine. But I haven’t be able yet to find any change. Perhaps it was only works under the hood they did at Samsung.
Just as the country settings it would surprise me if it depends on that. I don’t think that the way on how you connect to the internet is the solution but I do not want to crush your hope.
I will post more ideas if I have them. Maybe you can try to set up a “dummy” connection to a mobile network and after that only use WiFi.
I was thinking, As we have the same software but apparently different fields on screen, would you mind sending me screenshots of your phone so that I can see where I (probably) do something different than you? If I am not mistaken pressing the lock and menu button simultaneously should create a screenshot of your device’s display at any moment.
I updated/editted my post with a transistion of the different screens. Hope this will help, fingers crossed.
I remember I have ever seen the active sync icon and the naming Exchange active sync. However I can’t find it anywhere any longer. What I have is “email for exchange” and a blue “at” icon Is there a way to reset the Phone to factory settings? perhaps I will get the actyve sync back than. I would like to send you the screenshots from my phone equivalent to the last two screenshots you have posted so you see what I mean. How can I send them to you?
If you go to settings, you can find a reset option. Selecting all items will result in a factory default I guess.
I synched my calendar with Facebook – it worked perfectly, the only problem now that i can’t delete the event from the phone calendar. It’s not showing up on the delete screen; not even after i deleted all. I deleted the event from FB and synched again. Didn’t work either.
Any ideas anyone?
Hmmm…, I’m sorry but I did not try to sync with facebook calendar. I’ll give it a try and see if I have te same problem. What I do know is that samsung released the wave with software that still needs some tweaks. So if it doesn’t work I think the best thing you can do is check samsung Kies on a regular base for software updates.
Hi, I have managed to sync Mac Calendar with Google Calendar – all fine. I have set up Exchange ActiveSync on the Wave as above – but when i go to do the SYNC – i am getting a ‘network unavailable’ message – any ideas of what this might mean? (i have enabled wifi and still get the same message – username and password are correct)
@HM: The reason why you cannot delete fb events is because fb does not allow you to sync in two ways, I think. You can only sync from fb to phone not from phone to fb. That’s why you cannot delete fb events. If I disable the fb calendar in the calendars menu item all the events from fb will be deleted in your calendar. Hope this solves your problem
@Simon UK: I think it’s because you did not configure a mobile internet connection yet. I think you have to set up a dummy connection to be able to connect also by wifi. I think this is a problem of the buggy software due to a premature release.
@Vince: New firmware released, I think you should update and your problem will be fixed.
Hi Ditso. I am from Brazil and having the same problem as @Vince. The account screen has only the Email for Exchange without domain, etc options. I just posted 2 pics of it in my twitpic:

In my opinion Samsung released the the software to soon. Lots of differences between devices and still lots of bugs hence the multiple updates. I also can’t seem to find the solution to that problem. I think it’s in the hands of Samsung.
